As part of the pedagogical strategies at Ameyali School, as well as sensitizing and promoting ecological awareness, we carry out different projects such as tomato planting.
The project begins with the preparation of the seedling; it is transplanted, it is taken care of, until culminating with the harvest of the fruit. Thus, the students, live and experience from the beginning, planting and harvesting.
Of course, the children get ready in advance to know what the project will consist of and the experience they will have, to live it fully, in a transversal context.
What is a seedling?
It is a place specially prepared to sow the tomato seed and raise it to transplant it to the ground.
Found in salads, in your hamburgers, in salsas and a variety of Mexican dishes, the tomato is native to the American continent, specifically South America. It was domesticated in Mexico.
The word "tomato" comes from the Nahuatl word "xitomatl", which means "stripped fat object" or "shellless fat object".
When it was exported to Europe, in ancient times, it was baptized as the "apple of love" and that contributed to its popularity in the European continent.
The Italians adopted it in their famous pizza sauce and learned to dehydrate it so that it could be consumed in winter. On the other hand, the Spaniards showed to Europe the Mexica way of preparing tomato sauce.
So, the next time you try a slice of pizza, you will know that its sauce has something, or a lot, of Mexican.
