At Ameyali School we love to carry out significant activities that develop in students the sense of belonging and appropriation. Such was the case of our traditional sculpture contest dedicated to Catrina, held on October 28.
The contest sought to motivate and encourage creativity, the reuse of materials, sense of humor, work and family connection, lots of fun, as well as the preservation of customs that strengthen our sense of identity.
The contesting students made Catrinas with a variety of materials, alluding to different themes, costumes and colors. This colorful and elegant character was the protagonist on October 28, along with the creativity of children and their families.
However, who is the Catrina? What is the origin of this picturesque character?
The Catrina is a Mexican icon, which originates in 1873, from the hand of the Mexican cartoonist, illustrator and painter, José Guadalupe Posadas, a native of Aguascalientes who was known for making marvelous folkloric drawings, full of customs and social criticism.
His illustrations and cartoons were published in different newspapers of the Porfirian era. Some places that still keep his work are the National Institute of Fine Arts and the José Guadalupe Posada Museum, located in Aguascalientes.
Our talented artist inspired renowned painters such as Diego Rivera, who in his work Dream of a Sunday afternoon at Alameda, takes up the Catrina in a beautiful and masterful way.
The Catrina was not originally named that. The name that Posada gave it was "Calavera Garbancera” or “Chickpea Skeleton”. It was actually Diego Rivera who renamed it with the popular name we know today and is in the public domain.
As you can see, this picturesque character has a long history within the national imaginary. In their own way, the participating Catrinas of Ameyali School will add folklore to our traditional Kermesse of the Day of the Dead.
At Ameyali Puerto Vallarta School, our mission is to promote harmonious development in a humanistic and inclusive environment.
