From a young age, children manifest some early musical skills. They emit babbling, unique sounds and they can even imitate patterns sung by other people. In fact, at the age of two months, babies can now match the tone, volume and melody of the songs their mothers sing to them. Children show a predisposition to assimilate these musical aspects and get involved in sound games.
This sensitivity means an interesting potential in their musical development and this process can be seen in a playful, fun and experimental way. The areas of the brain involved in the development of musical skills are: the frontal and temporal lobe, and the right hemisphere.
At two years of age, children are able to invent their own melodies and play some fragments of songs they hear around them. At four years of age this process deepens. It represents a crucial moment in the life and hearing of children: both the possibility of the child to invent their own melodies and, at the same time, play the songs they listen to, are facing one another.
The musical feedback that the child receives during this stage, both at home and at school is quite important. It is normal that at that age the production and inventiveness of melodies diminish a bit and they choose to imitate the predominant music in the environment.
However, it is essential that parents and teachers pay attention and encourage the interests and aptitudes of children.
• Observe and show interest in the skills children show. Although there are activities that they do in a natural way, these can be an indicator of certain affinities and a potential vein in the development and vocation of the child.
• Devote time to the development of skills. Take the child to a concert, course, workshop... Even sing with him or her; appreciate some musical piece together at home. This will make the child feel motivated and perceive that activity as a time to strengthen family ties.
• Instill patience and perseverance. There are children who show different musical aptitudes, since each child develops and learns at their own pace. It is important that the child feels happy when performing any musical activity, cultivate patience and perseverance when adopting the formal language of music. Accompany the child in discovering his or her own potential.
