Investing in the Emotional Education of Our Little Ones
The development of emotional intelligence is synonymous with higher self-esteem. As teachers, and as parents, we have to develop activities that aid children in identifying their own emotions and the emotions of others. Doing so allows them to become more empathetic, and increases their ability to interact with their peers, friends, teachers and family members.
At Colegio Ameyali, we understand through our humanist approach that a child who knows themselves, learns to self-regulate. They do not repress themselves, but rather control their impulses, calm themselves down, and can recognize negotiation opportunities. A happy, motivated child is a child who wants to attend school, who puts effort into their studies without getting frustrated, who accepts their limitations and seeks support from their teachers, parents, friends and family.
Let’s educate our children with the mentality of healthy coexistence beginning at home. If, as parents, we become frustrated, stressed, anxious, or fail to regulate ourselves; our children will become a reflection of our own emotional education. Let’s not leave all the responsibility to their school, let’s be aware and work together with their school and teachers, and with fellow classmates’ parents.
As parents, we must enhance our children’s capacity to be happy, develop a sense of humor, resist frustration, and offer tools to help them control their own emotions and respect those of others. Likewise, we shouldn’t be generating immediate rewards, but rather encouraging a positive attitude towards life by talking about the effects of their negative emotions and on maintaining a positive outlook.
When we are taking the time to choose a private school, we are also looking for quality and warmth where our children’s emotional intelligence is also being focused on. We look for the assurance that their hearts will be cared for during the 8 hours or more that they will be spending at their school daily.
Emotionally healthy children become successful adults, with the ability to flow harmoniously and positively influence their environments. An integral education, where emotions are valued, creates natural leaders with the capacity to negotiate and transcend.
Here are some strategies to encourage and support your children’s emotional education:
